We had the yummiest opportunity recently to try out some of the freshest seafood around. On average, a fish classified as fresh, has most likely been out of the water for around two weeks? Sitka Salmon has made it their goal to keep the fish as fresh as possible and require that the fish be delivered to the plant within three days to go through the blast freezer – maintaining as much freshness as possible!

The fish arrives on your doorstep in an insulated shipping box, under some dry ice. The plastic liner around the contents is made using recycle plastic. The foam that protects the fish and ice is compostable and can be used as plant food if it is dissolved in a bucket. Sitka Salmon Shares has truly thought through each step of this process to reduce any waste or harmful effects on the environment.

How does Sitka Salmon Shares work? You join in with Sitka Salmon to receive your monthly “share” of what is caught. You’ll receive anywhere from 4.5-5 pounds of fresh, wild-caught fish on your doorstep each month. You can pay for the entire share up front or montly if you’d rather. If at any point, you are unhappy, you are free to cancel. Although, once you taste this fresh fish, I doubt you will want to cancel!

Each box will vary on type of fish based on the varieties they catch. In 2019, the different species of what was caught include wild Alaskan king salmon, sockeye salmon, coho salmon, keta salmon, lingcod, black bass, black cod, Pacific cod, yelloweye, rockfish, spot prawns, Dungeness crab, albacore tuna, and halibut. So you can see there is quite a variety!

Along with the package of fish delivered on your porch, you get a copy of their pamphlet The Catch. In this booklet, there are there are stories of how things work in the fishing world. The particular pamphlet we received included a very detailed article and illustration for how the cutting line at the plant worked. You’ll also receive two easy, yummy recipes with your box

We were sent two packages of Cod and two packages of salmon to try. I’m going to be honest, fish is not always my favorite. I made a siracha glazed salmon and a beer battered fried cod so far. Both of these dishes tasted amazing! I have no doubt it was due to the quality of the fish and how fresh it was. I have tried buying frozen fish at the grocery store only for it to have such a fishy taste that we couldn’t eat it. For the other two packages we were sent, I am planning on trying out the delicious looking recipes that came along with the fish.

Some things Sitka Salmon Shares is proud of:

  • Wild: Wild-caught from the pristine waters of Southeast Alaska and the North Pacific
  • Sustainable: Harvested using hook-and-line methods to minimize negative ecological impact
  • Traceable: Our relationships ensure that your fish is traceable to the boats of our fishermen-owners and trusted community partners
  • Fishermen-centered: Individually caught by one of our fisherman-owners or partner fishermen (who we hope are on their way to ownership!). Fishermen ownership makes us distinct from our competition and creates a more just system that values hard work, high-quality fish and low-impact harvesting methods.
  • Just: Our fishermen receive an average of 20-30% more for their harvest, which can equate to $10,000 extra income in a given season
  • Premium: Blast-frozen at the peak of freshness to ensure the highest quality, guaranteed
  • Convenient: Home delivered directly to your door, with recipes and a newsletter about the fishermen who caught that month’s share
  • Conscious: Carbon offsets purchased and 1% of revenue donated to efforts promoting small-scale fisheries and conservation in Alaska.
