Thoughts on Writing Magazine Articles

Growing up, most school subjects came fairly easy to me, even if I did give my mom a hard time every now and then. The one subject that I absolutely hated and struggled with was writing. I think part of it was that I just don’t embellish what I have to say. I am pretty straight to the point without fluff words. I think the other reason I didn’t do as well with writing was that it wasn’t black and white with only one correct answer like math and science. If you had told me back when I was younger that I would be writing my own blog, I would’ve thought you were crazy! The idea of being a writer for a magazine article would’ve been even crazier to me! Yet, here I am! I have my own blog and contribute quarterly to a homeschool magazine with articles about raising kids up with Christ-like qualities.

This last article I submitted was about exhibiting courage like Jesus did. The thing I find so interesting about writing these articles is that it really makes me think deeper on each subject. Last quarter my article was about kindness. In the writing process I had the realization that I was just going through the motions each day of all the little daily checkboxes without really showing kindness or teaching the boys to seek out moments of kindness.

With the character quality of courage, I am really hoping to teach my boys that courage comes in many forms. The biggest point of courage I want to pass onto the boys is the act of standing up for what is right. It is my hope that my boys will defend what it right and their true beliefs around their friends and school situations.
