When the temperatures rise into the 100’s in the summer in Texas, what is a perfect family activity? Heading to the waterpark is the best way to cool off on these hot, summer day. Especially in the crazy 2020 year we’ve been having. Splashway Waterpark & Campground is the perfect family waterpark to visit for a day (or more if you can).

A Little Info about Splashway:

Our family has wanted to visit Splashway for a few years now. We are so glad we finally had the chance to experience it! This waterpark is seriously just the right size for families. It isn’t so big and spread out that we are too worried to let our big boys go off on their own, while at the same time it is big enough to keep everyone entertained all day. We found a perfect picnic table in the center of the park to set up as our “spot” for the day. Cabanas can also be rented daily. Prices start at $95/weekday, $130/weekends and holidays.

Lockers are available to rent for the day. The come in three sizes – small, medium, and large. The lockers are located near the middle of the park, so easy access to them from any location.

What to pack for the day:

Another way that Splashway is unique and perfect for families is that coolers are allowed, just no glass, knives, electric cookware, or alcohol. We packed our lunch, snacks, and drinks. Knowing we had four boys who would be extremely hungry after playing in the water, you would have thought I was packing for an army! Now if you don’t want to pack your lunch, there are plenty of food choices available at Ray’s Cafe, Splash Burger, or Beachside Pizzeria! We did try out a delicious funnel cake. On these funnel cakes, you can choose chocolate, caramel, strawberries or whipped cream as a topping.

When the temperatures in Houston are this hot, the ground is even hotter! We visited on a day when the temperature was over 100*, aside from the ground being extra hot we reallly didn’t notice the heat! Plan to pack either water shoes or flip flops to avoid burning your feet when walking from ride to ride. Many of the rides had cubbies to store shoes in or just wear the water shoes on the rides.

If you are anything like our family, you always want to keep your phones close by to capture all the pictures possible. We each have one of these waterproof phone cases to wear around our necks so we can annoy our children as much as possible … oops, I mean, take as many pictures as possible! You can purchase these ahead of time on Amazon for less than $10

What were the rides like?

Each slide in the park is differentiated by thrill level (low, medium, and high) and by height restriction.

  • The Criss-N-Cross has no height minimum and is considered low thrill level.
  • To ride Dueling Splash Blasters, Hurricane hill, Jet Stream, Midnight Storm, Ray’s Racers, Slippery Twister, Tropical Storm, and Tubular Tornado there is a minimum height of 42″.
  • Toddler Bay (under 36″), Pirates of Kiddie Cove (under 55″), Costa Del Ray (under 48″), and Minnow Pond (under 36″) are all for the smaller kids.
  • Loco Mono, Pirates Plunge, and Ray’s Riptide are the only three rides that riders must be 48″ tall. Our Adler was too small for these.

Moment of Patriotism:

One of the neat things we experienced during our day at Splashway was when they played the National Anthem over the loud speaker. Everyone in the toddler area we were in stopped what they were doing, put their hand over their heart, and faced the flag. I will say, I wasn’t expecting it at all. But, it was nice to see and feel the American Patriotism somewhere you least expect it, especially how 2020 has been going.

COVID-19 Safety Precautions:

Let’s talk about COVID-19 Safety precautions we saw. All staff (non-lifeguard) were wearing masks. Hand sanitizer stations placed around the park. The rides had a limited number of tubes and rafts to keep lines at a minimum. There were place holders on the ground reminding guests where to stand to keep the distance. Overall, we felt very safe and without worries!
