Halloween is right around the corner! We finally have picked out AND purchased a costume for each of the boys.  Aiden decided to be a geologist this year.  Anson wants to be a baseball player. Aaron wants to be Captain America with muscles! The littlest boy, Adler, we struggled with his costume since he couldn’t really express his opinion about what he wanted to be.  I found a dinosaur costume for him and he loved it!

Every so often our Grammia (Grandma) surprises us and sends over a care package filled with some fun goodies!  In this particular package, there were two Halloween books, a haunted gingerbread house kit, and a bunch of candy!  I think the boys were most excited about the candy! You can get your own haunted house making kit

Once we were ready to assemble and decorate our haunted house, we got everything set up and ready to go.  Unfortunately when we opened the box, 3 pieces of gingerbread were broken!  I’m not sure if it was from being mailed and dropped or if maybe it was just like that.  We tried gluing the pieces back together with the icing that came with the kit, but that didn’t work at all!  SOOOO, we had to improvise! We hot glued the broken pieces back together and pretended like nothing ever happened!  That is until….the boys wanted to eat the house!  More on this later.

Let the decorating begin!  My only instructions were that everyone needed to help.  They needed to work together.  And, maybe they should make a plan and talk it out before the began.  The four of them worked very intently on this house for quite awhile!  They even went back and fixed details that were not turning out like they had hoped.

Now, doing this project and giving them this freedom is usually a challenge for me!  I like things decorated a certain way. I like things symmetrical and organized.  Over the years, after practicing this letting go process, I am much better at it!  I know that the boys need to learn to create and design on their own as well as work together with their brothers!  This was the perfect project for them to practice teamwork!

It was really neat to watch them work out the design and delegate tasks before they started. Surprisingly, there wasn’t a single squabble about who was able to do each part! Sometimes with four boys, things are amazing like this.  But, some other times aren’t nearly as peaceful and we have lots of disagreements!

Final product turned out very eclectic, not necessarily my style, but they were super proud of themselves!  The, in the next second they asked wanted to eat it!

We normally just purchase Christmas gingerbread houses, but the boys enjoyed making this one as spooky as they could.  I would like to start adding in a Halloween gingerbread house like this each year!
